Six new projects have been selected from the 4th EU-BR Collaborative Call in ICT by RNP and the European Commission, along with the Brazilian Secretary for Policy in Informatics (Sepin) within the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communication (MCTIC).
The projects involve 68 institutions, of which 39 are from Brazil and 29 from Europe, spanning 38 Universities, 18 companies and 12 research centres. From a total of over R$ 52 million funds available, Brazilian institutions will be granted R$ 26 million with European institutions receiving the same amount (around €8 million). These funds come from “Informatic Law” and will be applied to institutions registered in the TI Committee (Cati), managed by MCTIC.

About the participation
Proposal submission was open to:
All proposals involve 310 institutions and 968 applications from researchers.
Projects are expected to start in November this year, with a timeframe of 3 years. On the Brazilian side, projects will be monitored by RNP and supervised by MCTIC, while on the European side, this task will be carried by the European Commission.
Regarding the regional distribution of Brazilian institutions, 46% of all applications came from Northeast, North and Centre West. For the first time ever, the call required the distribution of resources according to the priority regions listed in “Informatic Law”. Therefore, 44,45% of resources were allocated to institutions from Sudam, Sudene or Centre West.
4th EU-BR Collaborative Call
The goal of the 4th EU-BR Collaborative Call is to strengthen synergies between the existing skills in Research and Innovation in Brazil and the European Union, with a special focus for institutions that work with industry. In recent years, Brazil and the European Union have consolidation international co-operation ties in science and technology, by launching collaborative calls for R&I projects in ICT. This is the 4th step towards this collaboration. The 3 previous EU-BR collaborative calls were launched in 2010, 2012 and 2015. Collectively, 193 proposals have been submitted in the 4 calls, with 20 retained for funding for a total of €25 million from both Brazil and the European Union.
According to R&D Coordinator from RNP, Wanderson Paim, the benefits from EU-BR cooperation are important in several levels. “Strategic wise, since we are cooperation on topics which are common interest between Brazil and European Union. Tactic, since both European and Brazilian institutions work together to elaborate and execute these projects, sharing same information and interests. Operational, where researchers, students, professors, industry professionals work directly with European partners in developing products, prototypes and scientific productions”, stated Paim.
